-Starfield-
(level: beginner)

This is a really easy way to get a decent star-field effect... just like i used for the background of this site.

Simply follow the instructions below and in a few short minutes you'll have a star-field to call your very own!

(note: all measurements are in pixels.)

Step 1:

Create a new document... any size will do. (For the purpose of this tutorial i used a 300 x 300 canvas.)

(If this layer is locked: either rename the layer from "background" to something else (i.e.: "starfield"), or (un)click the lock symbol at the top of the layer palette.)

 Fill with Black.

Step 2:

Now go to the Filter menu and choose: Noise > Add noise

Amount: 15%

Distribution: Gaussian

Monochromatic: Checked

Step 3:

Now go to the Image menu and choose: Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast:

Brightness: -50

Contrast: +50

That's it! You have a star-field!

(Which tiles nicely too!)

Optional:

Now you can feel free to adjust your starfield to your taste...

Here are some examples with different Brightness/Contrast values...

(All use a Gaussian Noise of 15%, you can adjust this for to taste as well)
